I had the pleasure of going to the Horseshoe on Friday evening with my girlfriend to see my friends’ band The North.

The lineup for the evening was:

The North
Pat Robitaille
Brett Caswell and The Marquee Rose
Michou

Overall, the night was the best indie night I’ve ever experienced in the Toronto music scene to date (only closely matched by The Loose Change Trio show at The Horseshoe Tavern). There was however, one thing about the show that bothered us after a while: All but one band knew how to keep the crowd interested and end a song.

It occurred to me that in a live setting, it’s crucial to understand how to end a song. An audience does not want to hear you jam for an hour like you’re at a band practise. Get their attention, get your point across, and then finish.

On a completely different note: Merch sales.
On 7 different occasions throughout the evening, I tried purchasing some merch from the bands performing that night, but at no point was anybody at the merch table to take my money. How do you expect to make money if nobody is able to give you their money?!

I saw him.

His chilled gaze caught me mid-step
I avoided it as if exchanging glances with a grade school crush

If the scene had been photographed, he stood within the limelight.
With a head held atop like a trophy.
Had the moment been a movie, his role greatly outshined that of his passerby.

Though the interaction was virginal, the experience echoed.
Reverberating a familiar tune.

And yet I do not call him by name, I despise him.
Not for what he is, but for what I am not.

Staying in the lines

It’s funny how society, parents, school, and even recreational activities prepare us for things later in our life.

Even something simple like coloring within the lines in a coloring book. It prepares us to stay within the lines later in life, like while driving.

The importance of passion

It is of utmost importance to have a passion in your life. Something that, no matter what, you will always do. A true passion is one of the things that you do, regardless of your occupation, and sometimes you may choose to work a job just so you can live your passion separately. This is something I strive for. And I feel there are things in my life that I am this passionate about. Music, Teaching, Learning, Finding Peace & Compassion.

What is your passion? What do you put above all else? If you cannot answer this, perhaps it is time you found it!

A life ambition

It is a life ambition of mine to experience life and love in every action, thought, breath, step that I take. I wish to express my passion in life, through everything that I do, down to the remedial tasks of day-to-day life.

The perplexity of relativism

So many times I have asked myself the question, “what is right, and what is wrong?”. And when I do so, there seems to be 2 discrete paths to take into consideration in that discussion: 1) There is an absolute right and wrong, for every situation. 2) Right and wrong are relative to each person and situation.

So what do I consider right and wrong? Perhaps the 2 roads are not as discrete as they might seem. I think that relativist decisions fall upon a sliding scale of right and wrong (opposed to a black and white comparison), which is built upon cultural & social expectations, and ethical implications of each circumstance.

I understand how it can seem confusing, but I feel what I am doing is right, and I think that is important.

The Waiting Room

How did I get to this place? This room seems like the waiting room for Dr. Kevorkian, and this television represents what so many describe as life flashing before their eyes. Yet, I am not the only one watching this exhibition of nostalgia.

Who are all these people, sitting and watching my life on display? And why was I handed this book of photographs?

It’s moments like this that scare you. Where, in your most vulnerable state, you’re handed a scrapbook to remind you of you at your best, and suddenly you remember what it felt like when you first entered this world – Exposed, and susceptible to society’s burdens. And there’s a panel of judges there, watching it all happen.

It’s frustrating because you can watch and relive every moment of your life, but no matter how hard you try, you can’t change the footage that’s flashing before your eyes. I suppose the one important question right now is, “How much of this movie can I stand to watch?” and as you ask yourself this, you wonder how much of your life you’ve actually lived.
